The OpenFiler application provides the file-based network-attached storage and block-based storage area network.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Installation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Boot the server hardware using the OpenFiler installation ISO and follow the steps. This is very similar to the installation of CentOS operating system.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure you configure the IP address and make a note of it during the installation process.<\/li>\n<li>The ISO image used when writing this article is:<br \/>\nopenfileresa-2.99.1-x86_64-disc1<\/li>\n<li>Once the installation is complete, you can access the web interface by accessing the following URL:<br \/>\nhttps:\/\/&lt;ip address&gt;:446<\/li>\n<li>The default admin user credentials are:<br \/>\nUsername : admin<br \/>\nPassword : password<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can use OpenFiler to configure NAS storage, use as a SAN storage, etc<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps to create and share a new block device to ESX or any other host:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In order to share a new block device to a server, similar nature as a SAN volume, go to the \u201cVolumes\u201d tab.<\/li>\n<li>Select the \u201cCreate new physical volumes\u201d link<\/li>\n<li>Choose the disk you want to use. In my example I have added a new disk of 20GG and is mapped as \u201c\/dev\/sdb\u201d by my system. Click on \u201c\/dev\/sdb\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Since this is a new disk the disk will be 100% free<\/li>\n<li>Scroll below and under the section \u201cCreate a partition in \/dev\/sdb\u201d create a partition of your choice. I created a partition of 10GB<\/li>\n<li>Select the \u201cVolume Groups\u201d link on right.<\/li>\n<li>Under \u201cCreate a new volume group\u201d section, Type a new name, for example \u201cVG01\u201d, select the partition \u201c\/dev\/sdb1\u201d and click the \u201cAdd Volume Group\u201d button.<\/li>\n<li>You will be able to see the new group we just created, VG01, under \u201cVolume Group Management\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The next step is to create a volume. For this press the link \u201cAdd Volume\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the section \u201cCreate a volume in &#8220;vg01&#8243;\u201d, \u00a0enter a name, for example \u201cVOL_DS1\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>As description I entered \u201cVolume to be used by ESX as Datastore\u201d since my intention is to mount this in my ESX host.<\/li>\n<li>In the \u201cRequired Space\u201d use the full area by dragging the slider bar.<\/li>\n<li>In the \u201cFilesystem \/ Volume type\u201d select \u201cblock, iSCSI, FC, etc\u201d since we will be mounting this volume as a block device in the ESX host.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the \u201cCreate\u201d button.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now you will see the newly created volume<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>Openfiler is a Linux based operating system.
