{"id":3,"date":"2010-01-06T17:12:19","date_gmt":"2010-01-06T17:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.genuinewebhosting.net\/linuxguru\/tutorial\/?p=3"},"modified":"2025-05-23T17:41:55","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T17:41:55","slug":"red-hat-enterprise-linux-4-installation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/shijuvarghese.com\/?p=3","title":{"rendered":"Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 INSTALLATION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This page gives basic instructions on how to install Redhat Linux software on a new host<\/p>\n<p>Two types of Installations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Local: \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Through CDROM or Hard disk<\/li>\n<li>Network: \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Through FTP, NFS, HTTP<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Procedure to setup NFS server (RHEL4) for nfs installation:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make a directory \/RedHat\/RPMS in your server.<\/li>\n<li>Copy content of RPMS folder from all installation disks to \/RedHat\/RPMS directory.<\/li>\n<li>Copy RedHat folder from first CD to the \/RedHat\/ folder.<\/li>\n<li>Set appropriate permissions. eg: &#8220;chmod -R 755 \/RedHat&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In the \/etc\/exports file set permissions so that others could access the \/RedHat folder.<\/li>\n<li>echo &#8220;\/RedHat *(ro)&#8221; &gt;&gt; \/etc\/exports<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Selection of installtion using NFS<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Boot the client host using the 1st CD or a bootup disk.<\/li>\n<li>At the time of installation, use text askmethod to prompt to choose the media\/network source for installation.<\/li>\n<li>Now we could select cdrom or nfs server as required.<\/li>\n<li>We will have to give the ip of the nfs server and the folder &#8220;\/RedHat&#8221; to perform nfs installation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Every peripheral device is identified as a file.<\/p>\n<p>Hard disk\/partition identification<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Disk 1, Partition 1 = \/dev\/hda1<\/li>\n<li>Disk 1, Partition 2 = \/dev\/hda2<\/li>\n<li>Disk 2, Partition 1 = \/dev\/hdb1<\/li>\n<li>Disk 2, Partition 2 = \/dev\/hdb2<\/li>\n<li>Floppy Disk = \/dev\/fd0<\/li>\n<li>Serial drive = \/dev\/ttys0<\/li>\n<li>SCSI = \/dev\/sda<\/li>\n<li>Monitor = \/dev\/console<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>BOOT DISK: Boot disk could be created by copying \/media\/cdrom\/image\/boot.iso to a new CD.<\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ <![CDATA[\ngoogle_ad_client = \"pub-2655323959365423\";
